Amsterdam 10th April 2015: In Middelburg, design agency ESTIDA completed the extensive refurbishment of the new boutique hotel The Roosevelt. The luxury hotel, which is already in operation, will have its official grand opening shortly.
Hotel The Roosevelt is a private initiative of entrepreneurs and couple Martin and Raymonde van der Louw from Middelburg. The hotel is located in a fifties monument by Dutch architect J.F. Berghoef and is located on the Burg van Middelburg. It is named after the former United States president Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had ancestors from Zeeland. Due to ESTIDAs elegant and modest interior concept, the historical building unites grandeur and soberness. The elegant thirties and forties style during the Roosevelt presidency were at the base of the design and creation of the hotel.
Because of the particular demands from both a technical and an aesthetic point of view, rebuilding the monumental premises was a challenging project. The hotels unusual atmosphere was created by the contrast between the authentic details on the one hand and the use of modern elements and rich and colourful fabrics on the other. For instance, the copper pipework and several un-plastered walls remained visible and the stone floor and sandstone stairs were preserved in order to emphasize the monumental status of the building. Adding thirties style walnut furniture and luxurious materials to these elements completed the hotels unique mixture of modern and traditional elements. The use of Franklin Roosevelts favourite colour aquamarine in the design and offering the C.O. Bigelow soap Eleanor used to the guests, are proof of the attention to detail in the hotel concept.
The boutique hotel has 28 unique rooms and 5 suites, including a Presidential Suite, which are all united by consistently using recurring details such as colour and furniture. The room layout is smart and efficient, which optimises the use of space. In the Duplex suites for example, the height of the rooms has been put to use by building in a second level. Adding the empty hallway space to these suites enlarged the rooms.
Also, the washrooms have been installed in unusual spaces such as former vaults. They have been furnished with freestanding baths, separate washbasins and beautiful tiling. Furthermore, the hotel has a unique and sheltered city garden. The hotels showpiece is the cosmopolitan public wine bar D’Oriënt with its distinctive Krion bar top and green glass mosaic in the bar front, which will also attract many visitors from Middelburg and its vicinity.
